The thoracic facet joints or zygapophyseal joints provide support, stability and mobility to the thoracic vertebrae, especially on extending, bending and rotation of the middle back. Similar to other joints in the body, these joints are vulnerable to inflammation and degeneration. Thoracic facet joint disorders can cause significant back pain and other symptoms if left untreated. These conditions can be treated by inactivating nociceptors in the thoracic zygapophyseal capsule using temporary blocks with a local anaesthetic and an additional steroid, when necessary.
