Radicular thoracic syndrome, also known as intercostal neuralgia, is an uncommon spinal disorder. It is characterized by a girdle-shaped pattern of pain with possibly mild accompanying abnormality of algesia. Foraminal narrowing, spinal canal stenosis, disc herniation, bulging discs and bone spurs, among others, may cause irritation or inflammation of the nerves as they leave the spine area. These conditions can be treated by analgesia and desensitization of the irritated spinal nerve root through repeated periradicular infiltration of a local anaesthetic to achieve permanent reduction of pain. A radiograph is required for orientation.
