Muscle strains in the middle back caused by damage to the muscles are the most common sources of upper back pain. Myofascial pain refers to pain caused by muscular irritation. Trigger points are small knots that form in muscles, which are very sensitive to touch or pressure. Predilection sites comprise the muscle insertions of the trapezius, deltoids and rhomboids. Painful tense muscles can be relieved by infiltration of these muscles using a local anaesthetic into the trigger point.
