Occipital neuralgia is a headache with pain that starts in the upper neck or back of the head and may spread to the area behind the eyes and to the back, front and side of the head. This condition can be treated through an injection of a local anaesthetic and an additional steroid, when necessary, around the greater and lesser occipital nerves that are located on the back of the head just above the neck area.
